Ford FreestarThe Ford Freestar is a solid, highly capable minivan that performs well and offers all the latest safety features. Much of the Freestar's structure and design came from the Windstar it replaced. Windstar offered class-leading safety and solid performance for its time. Freestar is the highest quality minivan it has ever built.
Took my Freestar in to Midas today with a pulsing in the brakes typically associated with warpped rotors. It was a pretty noticeable pulse which made me believe it was on the front.
Fronts turned out to be just fine but backs were warped due to a jammed pad!?! They said the pad had somehow gotten stuck in a crooked position which heated the rotor (not sure which side).
This issue somehow had caused my brake pedal to not be as firm as Fords typically are along with an ebrake that didn't really work and a groan in the pedal that was discussed in a previous post.
The Midas mechanics could easily told me the rotors were worn beyond usefulness and needed to be replaced but did the right thing by simply turning them; I would have had no way of verifying the rotors thickness and tolerances for being turned so I appreciate their honesty. They could have easily told me this was an issue with the calipers as well.
Above all else, they fixed the problem and returned the van to me with a much better feeling brake system. I got new pads and turned rotors and a well lubricated brake system (some parts, like cables need to be rust free towork right) At the end of the day I left for under $200 including taxes.
Interesting enough this van has had this problem since I bought it. I even took it to the dealer because of the squishiness in the brake pedal but they said it was ok. The lesson here is that dealers are not all knowing or powerful when it comes to maintenance and anyone who swears by them perhaps might be getting ripped off as they can charge much more than other mechanics for the same work.
I will be going to Midas for now on. For anyone who wonders why I don't do it myself; I would love to but life has temporarily taken that capability away from me.
