Ford Freestar The Ford Freestar is a solid, highly capable minivan that performs well and offers all the latest safety features. Much of the Freestar's structure and design came from the Windstar it replaced. Windstar offered class-leading safety and solid performance for its time. Freestar is the highest quality minivan it has ever built.

Saw another Freestar taxi this morning. In fact, I see lots of them. Makes me want to ask the co. what they do to keep trannies alive.

A little out of the subject here but I found a set of used 16 inch mags for sale, considering them for winter tire use, they are 5 stud 114.3 or 4.5 inches, so they fit the freestars they are 7 1/2 inches wide so I can go upto a P235 60 16 but they are weight rated at 1580Lbs each. So I guess 4 times 1580 lbs equals 6320 lbs. Would the weight rating of these mags be okay for the freestars?

I think that's the size of the stock mags on our '04 Monty Premier. They may be 245, however. I'll try to remember to check later. Check the data plate on the door pillar for gross weight.

It's all in the maintenance.....

And when you wear it out replace it....

Operator and driver negligents should be tolerated.....

However there are things that can be improved on.....

All manufacture have recalls and there flaws. Good stuff and bad stuff..

Just remember we (USA) dont make all of our own stuff. And that maybe that's the problem. Its the same as you working on your own stuff. You ether do a good job. Or you do a great job that last a long time.

Just food for thought....
Good Day Folk's...

The only info on the door pillar is GVWR @ 5860 Lbs, it has Front Max axle @2977 Lbs and Max rear axle @ 2900 Lbs. Many warnings on door pillar about Max cargo and occupants combined weight not to exceed 1200 lbs. The Mags are 1996 eagle alloys, nice clean set, no damage, I bought them as they were a steal at $140 for all 4, found 4 winterforce directional used winter tires with 95% or 12/32 thread on them for $200, all mounted and balanced. I'm assuming that the 5860 lbs minus 1200 lbs equals vehicles weight of 4660 lbs. Sounds right??

Outside of the torque converter failure, out Freestar has been reasonably reliable. Under warranty it was just a cruise control switch and power window motor. Since then, just the torque converter. However, it sounds like a front wheel bearing is starting to go.

Of course, tomorrow is another day...

Hello Friends........

Machines aren’t supposed to break, and mechanical components such as shafts, fasteners, and structures aren’t supposed to fail. But when they do fail, they can tell us exactly why.

It may sound a little far-fetched, but experts say that the causes for more than 90% of all plant failures can be detected with a careful physical examination using low power magnification and some basic physical testing. Inspection of the failure will show the forces involved, whether the load applied cyclically or was single overload, the direction of the critical load, and the influence of outside forces such as residual stresses or corrosion. Then, accurately knowing the physical roots of the failure, you can pursue both the human errors and the latent causes of these physical roots.

Thanks

Hi,

My name is Vinnie and I am in the process of doing some research on the torque converter failure of these vehicles. Being in the auto repair business for over 35 years, I have encountered several defects which in turn were deemed as design defects. If anyone that has encountered this problem and would like to become a case in this study please contact me on this forum or, if allowed, by email.

Thank you,
Vinnie

Are you my cousin Vinnie?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Fun movie.

What info do you have so far that leads you into this study?

We have a 2004 Monty 4.2 with 82K miles, and good tranny so far. All the sudden failures reported here have me considering doing a preventive change of the torque converter. What do you think?
