freestar won't shift into gear

Hi,

I was driving my Freestar (2005) and it slipped out of gear. now, the engine starts, but it will not shift into any other gear and gives a beeping sound. No dashboard alerts are showing.

What can cause this?

Possible faulty transmission range sensor (a $50 sensor that reads the gear selecter's position) It is a pretty easy repair, and might be the cause of your issue.

Now what beeping sound are you talking about?

i had a TRS go bad in my Windstar and it put the trans into "limp" mode. it starts out and stays in 2nd gear. Quite clever actually. It allowed me to start from a light and still able to drive in traffic and get it to the trans shop. Cost me 130 bux with labor. Better than a new trans.

yes, i've come home (100 mile trip to get home) on "limp" mode... and i was pissed with about 500 miles on the odometer. Luckily the Ford warrantee took care of it.

great feature, but i really was kinda pissed that my new 1998 Windstar already had a bad transmission, it turned out to be some sensor, or computer program... I don't even remember as it was 9 years ago.

I had the same problem. It turned out to be the neutral safety switch which is located on top of your tranny. Just behind your Mass Airflow Sensor. Easy repair and about 50.00
