Ford Freestyle The Ford Freestyle's roofline stands at 68 inches off the ground, and Ford has declined to put a label on it, either SUV or sedan. Keeping the Freestyle tall and offering all-wheel-drive seems to be attactive to non-SUV and non-Sedan car owners, and the Freestyle comes with low ground clearance, unibody construction, independent suspension and a overhead cam engine.

Default ***Power steering rack? Pump? Air? TSB..SOLVED!***

I fear it is my PS rack because it feels very similar to when my Avalon's PS rack went bad. I have an SEL 2005 AWD with 47,000 miles. I noticed every 3000 -5000 miles the PS fluid was slightly low and usually my mechanic or Jiffy Lube would top it off at the oil change. Well, in between services I noticed it was getting low and I added a few ounces (at most) of Castrol Mercon V ATF fluid. About two weeks later my wife said the steering felt "stiff" and would not return to center. I drove it and it felt fine. However this got worse and worse and now it is obvious while turning you can feel it go from "smooth" to "stiff" to "smooth" and then the same when turning back to center. Could it be the Castrol Mercon V fluid? Coincidence?

I am at the point where I used the "Turkey baster" method and put fresh Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF fluid...but it did not help.

There is no groaning or whining from the pump. An obvious leak, but very, very slight...no marks on the driveway though. Could the screen in the reservoir be clogged and cause this? If so, where is the screen located? Also, while the car is running when you look at the reservoir, the PS fluid gives the appearance of "boiling or bubbling"...is this typical? I would imagine so because it is located next to the pump. Any suggestions?

The most common place for a PS leak is the high pressure hose. If it looks wet, it is leaking.

BTW, if you do wind up replacing the rack, replace the high pressure hose at the same time. "An ounce of prevention ..."

Is the HP hose the large hose coming off the pump? Also, can I use Lucas PS stop leak even though Ford says do not use additives and ATF fluid only?

BTW, if it is the rack I guess I have nothing to lose by trying the Lucas? From what I read I should start out with adding just a few ounces?

Thanks for the continued help because I do not want to spend $1,000 for a rack and installation....
