Ford Galaxie The Ford Galaxie has effortless V8 performance, bulletproof mechanicals and great value make 30-year old Galaxie increasingly desirable with true-blue collectors. Size has everything to do with the on-going appeal of these cars. Although the newest are now more than 30 years old, a well-maintained Galaxie offers comfort and performance to rival cars half its age.

sorry forgot one q....Im looking for something in the 325 or 350 range...it is NOT going to be a highway car, just around town and maybe an occational trip to the strip....I could probably live with 300 gears because of the 460 and 3speed C6, plenty of grunt with the big block, but a bit better on the highway if I decide to take a cruise....

I would live with either of the 3.....anything lower (numerically higher) would be overkill for what I am going to use the car for.

Eventually I will put a locking diff on there, but for now the open is what I can afford.

I'd go with 3.55's

There will be no discernible difference between 3.55's and a 3.50. You can buy either as a ring and pinion set, but at the wrecking yard a 3.50 will be much more common. The ratios that sailor listed are the most common to be found in the boneyards.

These center sections are not nearly as plentiful as they used to be, but sailor is looking for the most common of them, so it should not be too difficult to find. The combination will be a 3.00, 3.25 or 3.50, 28 spline, open differential. This should be the easiest to find.

When you pluck one out of the wrecking yard, run a pattern and check the backlash before laying down your cash. You can look in most any decent auto service manual to see what the pattern should look like and how to do it. Also make sure the bearings are in good shape by making sure that everything turns smoothly.

Good luck,

Thanks! Well, I found about 9 to choose from, but I was unable to get a good look at them because the yard guy was busy and the axles were in the back room. The yard guy happens to be the brother of my brothers wife, so he is going to help me out by pulling them out of the cases and checking them over...I am going to go next weekend to see if he made any progress, but of course I will check them out myself after consulting a manual and before I buy any of them. Thank you for your help Doc!!

The yard guy (Randy) said he thought he had a couple of locking ones in the back, but was too busy to look at the moment....so maybe I will be lucky...if not I will be happy with a working open one, and he said I will get a good price as he wants to get rid of them (taking up too much space because they are complete rearends) and because his little sister is married to my brother.......who knows....can only wait and see

Well, my car has been on the back burner for a month or so, my truck broke and I need to replace the transmission, so that is coming first, then onto the Galaxie. Just thought I would put in an update

Default Galaxie rear end question

Hey all,
I have an "integral Carrier" center on my 67 -289 500.

It's now deeply rooted.

Do I have to replace it with exactly the same OR
can I replace it with a 9" & axle ?

Also does anyone know if these "integral" center's are readily available?

Matt.
