Ford Galaxie The Ford Galaxie has effortless V8 performance, bulletproof mechanicals and great value make 30-year old Galaxie increasingly desirable with true-blue collectors. Size has everything to do with the on-going appeal of these cars. Although the newest are now more than 30 years old, a well-maintained Galaxie offers comfort and performance to rival cars half its age.

Default transmission fill

I own a 1966 galaxie with a standard 289 3 speed, but for the life of me I cannot find the tranny fill, This is my first classic car but cannot seem to find anyone with this information. Also wondering how often the fuel gauge sending unit goes out..The connections and ground seem good but just wont read on the dash, Thanks for the help everyone! I'm also looking for performance parts such as cams, 4 barrel carb and intake, shorty headers. LEt me know.

There are two square head pipe plugs on the manual transmission, one for drain and one for fill. You will need some sort of pump to get your lube through the upper fill hole. You are very fortunate to have a precious manual transmission car. Cherish it. I am going through all sorts of stuff changing mine to a 3 on the tree.

Troubleshooting the fuel gauge is straight forward. Remove the lead at the tank sender and ground it with the ignition on and see if the gauge shows full or thereabouts. If it does, the sender is the problem. If not, the gauge, dash regulator or associated circuitry is the problem.

Since the 289 is so popular in Mustangs and shares so many parts with the 302 (5.0) there is an abundance of speed parts available. Don't go crazy on cam selection though. Remember this is a small, short stroke engine. I would consider about 212 or 213 degrees intake duration at .050" the upper limit. The most common mistake in cam selection is thinking that "if a little is good, then more must be better."

Enjoy.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info...I think i spent 30 min just staring under the hood thinking where the f#@k is the fill. Im sure the tranny is in good shape with the car only having 67,000 original miles but doesnt hurt to be safe.
