Due to the much bigger bore of a 427; if you put 427 heads, with big valves, on a small bore block you will need to notch the top of the bores for clearance. The 427 high rise heads have the best flow rates by far of any the stock heads. But the Edelbrock heads can flow even higher. Here are some of the flow numbers you can achieve with minimal effort:

i would just go with a 429/460. Really easy to work on, parts are cheap, and there were MANY of them. if you wanted you could put a fuel injected 460 from a pick-up into it. plus the 429/460 share a lot of parts with the 289/302-351W. you can even make a BOSS429 clone engine...
