Exclamation Need Engine/Transmission Help!

Hey Guys,

First off, I don't really know anything about Fords so work with me here, I only what what I have read in the last few days.

My friend has a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 we have been working on.

In Summary:

- Original Motor unknown, was swapped to a 289 at some point
- Motor was seized
- Assumed motor was 64/65+ 6 bolt motor
- Bought a 302 to put in it
- Took out the old motor, found out it was an early 5 bolt 289

So...a few questions:

1.) How do I identify the transmission in the vehicle?
2.) What would have come from the factory with this vehicle?
3.) Would I be better off changing the transmission or just the bell housing?
4.) Is a 6 bolt bell housing available for the transmission?

Any information would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS EVERYONE!

I can try to snap a picture tonight.

I'm hoping someone can tell me exactly where to look because the transmission is pretty dirty, short of cleaning the whole thing its hard to find numbers.

The only one I found so far was "3G24" or something.

Obvious question..... AUTO or MANUAL?
Look at the pan and try to find a pic on google. That's a start.

Hey Guys,

It would appear I am working with the original transmission, a Medium Case Cruise-O-Matic MX or FX. I have yet to identify 2 vs. 3 speed.

They only made the medium case Cruise-O-Matics until 1968.

If when the smaller (FMX) case came out (1968-1981) the bellhousings were the same I would be in good shape.

However, if the bellhousings are indeed different, I would be looking for a new bellhousing under strict guidelines. Would have to be a 1965-1968 Cruise-O-matic.

Anyone have any information to offer?

If it's an FMX throw it away. Hard as hell to find parts for, especially performance parts.
