Default Heater core replacement 66 Galaxie

Please tell me there's an easier way!

1 remove the hood, right hinge support bracket and the right hinge and mounting.

2 Loosen the wiring harness from the right fender and move harness to one side.

3drain cooling system and disconnect heater hoses from core and move out of way.

4 Run a strip of masking tape down the leading edge of the right front door to protect edge.

5 Unfasten at the rear of the right front fender, the bolts holding the fender to the body.

6 Block fender away from body and remove bolts holding heater housing to the dash.

7 Lift the fender and pull out the heater housing and core assembly.

8 Take cover off the housing and remove core.

This is what I've found and that's what looks like has to happen but I'm looking for a quicker or easier way from someone else that's had one out. I've had it bypassed all summer but hooked it up to get some heat out of her and it's leaking. Not to mention there's no air flow through it. Both hoses are hot but no heat.

I dont remember if yours is factory ac. if it is then its more than likely its like mine. There is a verticle nut and bolt that comes through the inner fender and attaches to the hood bracket. remove it and all the bolts that fasten the inner fender to the outer fender. not necessary to remove the battery. pull the inner fender down and swing out of the way. now you should have enough working room. i can post pics tomorrow if you want to compare your 66 to my 67.

Ok. The inner fender. That seems easier. It is factory A/C. There was also only one line connected to the vacuum controlled output control. What's the proper routing for that?
I was trying to move the doors under the dash manually to get defrost. I found the one at the fire wall under hood goes from dash to floor and the two other servos close the heater core door and the other one closed a door right at the fan. The 65 wiring diagram was way off for this system so I had to trouble shoot blindly to make the fan work. It ended up being a bad connection at the fan switch.
Thanks for the quick response.

You can also just pull the fender, there is no need to remove the hood and hinge. I've got the passenger side fender off my 67 LTD right now and the hood is still on there. The hinge bolts to the firewall and that and the inner fender are enough to support it.

The line from the water pump goes straight to the core, the line from the intake goes through the vacuum controlled valve.

ok, this is the shortest way to write this routing... from engine to cannister, cannister to dash, from dash to metal valve on fire wall (also has cable running to it) to heater control valve on fender. This has got to be THE weirdest set up ive ever seen. they use a combination cable and vacuum controller with a bi-metallic valve just to regulate how much vacuum is applied to the temp valve on the fender.

If i'm looking to just have heat to defrost the windshield then is there any reason to have this vacuum valve? I don't have one. Or a vac canister. Or a tree to pull full man vac for that matter. I would just like to know which doors you end up having open/closed when you throw it into defrost. I'm just going to wire them in the right position. I will have everything hooked up factory one day but that's probably the same day I re-wire the entire thing.
Thanks again.

I already know where those three doors are and the one under the hood. I just need to know the defrost configuration. Are the pics with it in the defrost setup?
