Default Stumped on alignment issue. Please help!

Ok , for those of you who dont know , I have a 65 galaxie . I put a 428 C6ME block into it last year and have been enjoying it with the automatic until I got the parts to put in the 4 speed. I got a HEH-R close ratio toploader for the tranny these came in 65 galaxies behind the 427 . they were large input and 28 spline output. I got an 11.5 clutch , seeing the 11 wouldnt fit the large input . I got the correct C5AA-6394-a bellhousing that was correct for the 65-67 galaixes . I was told these origonally had 11 clutches , but an 11.5 would fit . and I got an aftermarket flywheel from ebay (250323484037 item is identical to what I bought) that is externally ballanced and is 184 teeth. It is for a 428 FE motor. THe problem I have is , everything bolted up , but when I tried to bolt the starter up , the teeth were alreay engaged to flywheel, as if though the flywheel was wrong for the application or I needed some sort of spacer to let starter disengage . I burned one starter up ,because once the engine started it couldnt retract , there was no where to go . what did I do wrong? Should I get a flywheel for a 427 seeing that the transmission is for a 427 ? My 428 is externally ballanced. THe flywheel is 15.5 in diameter. is the flywheel incorrect for my application ? do I need a different bellhousing because I have a 428 from a 68 in there? the bellhousings from 68 behind cobrajets were 11.5 clutches. that make any difference? I thought all FEs had the same external dimensions . Im very frustrated and now Im gonig to need to tear the whole thing down it looks like . is there a spacer with the starter I need to get ? please help if you can . THis has been a real pain in the ass. thank you for all the help you can give .

You are WAY over my head so I personally can't help, but if I had a similar issue I would go to a local shop that rebuilds starters alternators and generators. Maybe all you need to do is put a different bendix drive on the starter that you have.

Good luck.

There is an engine block plate on it , and Maybe there needs to be some sort of shim for starter or a spacer , but I havent read anything about one needed for a starter. do any of you out there with toploaders have shims ? Thanks for the ideas guys.

If you google starter shim, you'll probably find several sources. They're fairly common.
