What I am referring to are the red/brown colored pieces of round rubber on two brackets. One welded to the y pipe, the other welded to the back part of the muffler itself.

I made some headway into identifying these. They indeed are vibration dampeners. Some earlier versions on Crown Vics and maybe others were made form steel and were filled with lead. Those were bolted to the exhaust flanges on either side where the y pipe meets the pipes from the manifolds or something like that.
These on the 07 V6 Mustangs are rubber atached to a bracket and one is welded to the muffler and another welded to one side of the y pipe.
What I did was replace the stock exhaust on this 07 with a "Pypes" brand true dual exaust system. The system went on really well and workd great. Howver I was finding excessive vibrations ringing through the loose ends of car at higher rpms just before the tranny would shift gears. The worst was at around 2000 rpm at 65 mph in overdirve. Pretty loud inside the car.
What I did was cut the dampeners off the original exhaust and welded the brackets to the u bolts on muffler clamps. Then I bolted One to the X pipe just forward of the x and the other to one of the mufflers just as the pipe went into the back side of the muffler.
The difference was astounding. Alot more even sound and little to no vibration compared to what it had been. Now I have to scour the junk yards for another pair of these dampeners to finish the project in a uniform matter.
