Ford Mustang The Mustang remains one of the most widely recognized, respected, and desired nameplates in the automobile business. The Ford Mustang defined the pony-car segment in 1964; Plymouth's Barracuda may have beaten Ford to the showroom by 16 days, but it was the Mustang that set the sales records. The 'Cuda is gone now leaving Ford's pony to prance alone.

Arrow Engine code

A friend of mine just bought a 67 Mustang fastback. The guy he bought it from says it's all original with a factory sunroof and a 429/4 speed. It is in need of restoration so I want to know what letter should be in the VIN for a 429. Any replies are appreciated.

As I recall the 429 wasn't introduced until 1969 as a purpose built "semi-hemi". It was built by Kar Kraft as the Boss 429 with a modified 428 cid cobra jet. The VIN code for the Boss 429 is a Z. Only about 1359 were built and each one had a NASCAR KK# tag on the driver side door. Going price today is about $250,000.00. So it seems while your friend may have a 429 cid engine, in 1967 the cobra jet block was not yet in production so the VIN would not be consistent.

Yeah, new info. ( cause I went and looked at the car myself ) It's not a 429, it's a 289, which makes more sense to me now. Sorry for the confusion. Still, which 289's are more desirable, the S code or the R code? There is an Rcode 289, right?

Actually, the R code was assigned in 1968 to the cobra jet 428 cid engine with 335 hp. The S code in 1967 was a GT 390 cid with 320hp; in 1968 the hp was 325hp for the same engine. The 289 cid engine codes in 1967 were C=200hp; A=225hp; K=271hp.
