98 Ford Taurus GL HELP.

So basically, my Ford Taurus is braking very strangely. When I come to a complete stop, it's almost as if it shifts itself to neutral, and if I'm on a hill, I'll start to roll back. The only way to fix this problem is to put it in park, turn it off, turn it on, and then put it in drive again. This only happens SOMETIMES, and just began in the past two days. But in the past two days it's happened about six times. I'm not a car person at all, but my father is and he's never even heard of this happening. I hope someone can please help, and if we have to go get it fixed, any estimations? 'Cause I swear we've spent more on repairs than the actual car.

I had a similar issue recently. I had a 1997 Taurus that would appear to go into neutral as I slowed or stopped and would suddenly re-engage as I attempted to accelerate. It would sometimes fail to go into any gear until I shut the car off and let it sit for a few minutes. My self diagnosis after removing the valve body is that I suffered from a cracked forward clutch piston. This is a common failure requiring transmission rebuild. I called someone and had them take the car away. I hope you are more fortunate.
