The 98 should work fine, but your current transmission will not bolt up. Is your ranger 2wd or 4wd?

Since it is 2wd, it would be more complicated. I don't know if there is a transmission for the v8 that is 2wd. You might need to have the transfer case there, just without the front driveshaft coming out of it.

The transmission won't work, because it isn't strong enough, plus it wouldn't bolt up properly. You could get a 4R70W (automatic) transmission, which is what is usually behind the v-8's. I've also heard that a ZF5 manual transmission from a 5.0 bronco will work, but I don't know for sure.

Edit: I think a T45 from a mustang would work also, and that way it would be a 2wd transmission.

I'd personally just put a C4 behind it.
