 SOLVED!!! To johnmark and robbie jay
After all of your help and time spent on this problem, I wanted to tell you the solution. The mechanic kept the car overnight and started it this morning when it started knocking really loud. He had decided yesterday to put in a new a/c clutch but this morning took out the compressor which was causing the problem and the sparking. Half of the bearings were gone, the metal was stripping off and the part that's supposed to be snug in four places (sorry - don't know the right words) was loose and rattling around.
So, he's looking for a used compressor and clutch to keep the cost down and if he can't find one he'll buy it new.
