Default 1997 escort wagon dies at stop signs

Hi, I am new to this forum, but I'm looking for help. I have a beautiful 1997 LX Wagon that continually dies at stop signs or whenever I need to slow down to a stop. The mechanic has checked it out, but unable to locate the problem. He installed an "idle speed control" but that did not seem to help. He also checked something about the fuel as the car seems to loose the gas and dies. He also mentioned a "coil" that might need to be replaced. Has anyone had this problem. Other than this, the car runs beautifully.

Thanks for your response. I for sure will inquire about "throttlebody being sludged up" - as I'm not a mechanic I sure don't know what you mean, but hopefully my mechanic will.

Have your charging system checked out. Battery, alternator and wires. All gas engines need electricity, if there is not enough at idle it will die. Especially if your foot is on the brake and the lights draw down the juice. If that is not the problem check the o2 sensor and vacuum tubing. There are numerous things that can cause it to die like that mostly electrical. Fords are notorious for electrical problems.
