I am in pretty much the same place. I have an '03 f150 which I am looking to do a little work to. I am most interested in bolt on kind of stuff; exaust, aircleaner, chip, etc...

Any help or guidence would be huge! thanks in advance!

Don't spend even a dollar on a chip, that won't do you a bit of good with a gas engine that doesn't have major performance modifications. Do the bolt on thing if you want about 10 more RWHP. Headers are generally the best investment performance wise.

If you do the bolt on thing and are looking for more change the heads, intake, and cams.

Absolutely Reprogram the Computer!

Not sure what chip you've been using. On a completely stock truck... You can Re-Program the 97 and up 4.6 and get 11 rwhp and 8 ft/lbs of torque... and don't forget that pesky lack of throttle that these trucks are known for is a ton better, you can set or remove speed limiters, set fans speeds, change the overall performance of the motor. AND... on most all applications you get all of this while increasing fuel economy!

So yeah, all of those bolts ons are great, but nothing tops the reprogramming of the computer. Make it run like a new truck!

Ok, how much are we talking for a custom tune?

Spend that money porting heads or swapping cams, and you'll get closer to 30 rwhp.

A Naturally Aspirated Custom Tune is $50 if you already have a tuner. If you don't have a tuner, an X3 is $399 and that comes with one Custom Tune. The SF3 is $379 and that comes preloaded to support most '96 and up Fords.

Here are some of the features of the Tuners:
-It has the ability to read and clear trouble codes
-It stores the stock file for warranty repair
-Has high speed on-device datalogging and monitoring
-Adjust shift points and shift firmness
-Set and remove speed limiters
-Can change idle RPM
-Make adjustments for axle and tire size changes
-Spark and fuel adjustments
-And a lot more...

Don't get me wrong, those upgrades are good. But with all these features and no down time, you have to admit it's a pretty good option. Plus, after you get bolt on upgrades the tuner will help with those too.

so basically for $429 you get 11 rwhp and basically the same thing as when you mash the throttle entirely.

$429 gets you pretty close to a set of PI heads and intake for that 4.6 truck Take a little time and port them and you could be talking about a 50 horsepower gain.

No, it's basically listed as above. $379 for preloaded and $399 for custom tuned, and it drives like a completely different vehicle better in all aspects.

This is 2008... Technology has advanced, bolts on and boring are not the only options these days. He was asking for options, I am giving additional options.

Let's take two trucks, both with PI head upgrades, one that I've tuned and one that has your way of thinking. I will bet my house that my version will beat yours.

You're missing the point. Bolt ons are good, tuning is good, tuning with bolt ons is better.

As a side note... looking at your signature, once you do get nitrous, you are going to want to setup a nitrous tune that retards the timing during peak shot.

most definetly, i will retard the timing

but i plan to use a duraspark II distributor and to manually set the overall timing back

BTW if you read my earlier posts, i made note of a "stock engine"

And if your up for it, I'll race a PI headed truck against a stock truck with a tune for. I'm getting awfully tired of renting...

Hey Jon, Do me a favor.. if you are going to reference my posts, please read them and reply correctly. This is second time you have replied with incorrect information. I wouldn't expect this from a forum moderator.

I said both trucks have PI head upgrades... one with a tune, one without.
