Question Camshaft adv timing???

Alright I've ordered my new cam for a 65 Galaxie 390. I plan on putting 4 deg of adv timing into the cam timing. I've been told this will move the power band down a couple of hundred rpm's. I've installed cams before but always at 0 deg.

My question is what will this do to the ignition timing? If I'm currently running 8 deg adv will it move it to 12 or 4 or no change at all?

No change at all you are just changing cam timing not ignition timing.I have found that usually the cam works best at what the manufacturer recomends.

I run 4 degrees advanced in my firebird, didn't help out on the torque much. I'd recommend you get a dial indicator and a degree wheel and just set the cam to the card, also you may want a few degrees of advance if you aren't running a pre-stretched timing chain.

There is my bird with the cam advanced and open headers.

Alright my cam kit came with a dbl roller timing set with a three position crank pulley. Thru some checking I found out that the 4 deg adv setting on the crank is going to give me 8 deg adv on the cam (don't know why I didn't see that coming). If this is so and I need 4 deg adv just for stretch will this work or is that going to be to much adv in the beggining?

The cam specs are 296deg 528 lift hyd 110deg sep. The whole purpose of adv the cam is just to move the power curve lower in the rpm range.

I've built several small block fords before and always set the cam at 0 deg. This is first attempt at a big block and I really don't want to have to pull her back down just to reset the cam.

I haven't started the tear down yet. I want to get all the technicals sorted out before I start.

My goal is to achieve aprx 400 hp in a full size Galaxie. It will be a street driver. I don't expect to do any drag racing, just want to have fun with a little pep and great sound with desent performance. At the same time I really don't want it to be too strong on the top end as this will be my sons car in a few years.

Thanks for ya'lls advice.

What does the rest of the package entail? What heads, intake, carb, exhaust, converter and gears will you be running?

All the components came the other day and the timing set instructions state the adv mark represent 4 deg "Camshaft" advance.

To answer the questions about the other components.

Heads - stock 390 2.02 in 1.55 ex (with plans for a tri angle valve job)
Intake - Eldelbrock performer aluminum
Exhaust - currently stock but I will be upgrading to a set of custom full legth tubulars
or either the shorty or full length 427 cast iron factory headers budget will decide.
Carb - Currently Holley 750 single pumper probably will upgrade later too a 800 dbl
pumper
Converter - Stock but with that being said the stock converter in the FMX was a
1800-2000 stall
Rear - Currently 9" 3.00 not sure of the spline count I think 31 but will be changing to a
3.25 - 3.50 posi.
