Default 390's and 67 Fairlanes

In considering the idea of putting a 390 into a non S-code `67 Fairlane I've heard that you can't use any old 390. Apparently 390's earlier than a certain year don't have the proper bosses machined into the block to accomodate the `67 Fairlane specific motor mounts. Can anyone confirm that? If it is true what year of 390 (beyond the obvious 66-67) is needed and where is a block date coded?
Thanks for your responses.
