Ford Pick-Up Ford Pickup Trucks - 1948 thru 1979 1948 was the year that Ford introduced the "F" prefix for use in designating the load capacity of its lighter duty trucks. The 1/2 ton was called an F-1, the 3/4 ton truck was referred to as an F-2 and the F-3 designation meant a one ton carrying capacity Pickup. The "F" series continued through F-8 for heavy duty trucks.

Default 1987 F-150

I recently returned from a 2 month trip. My truck sat idle the entire time I was gone. The battery was dead when I tried to crank it, so I charged the battery in place for the prescribed 2 hours. Afterwards, it cranked immediatly and idled for about 3 minutes and went dead. I cranked it again and it ran for about 10 seconds and went dead again. It would not start again. Thinking it was probably a stopped up filter, I changed out the filter and while I was there also exchanged the fuel pump. Total cost was $135.00. AND IT STILL WON'T START! Could this be a coil problem caused from me charging the battery in place? My fix-it book describes a TFI-IV ignition coil and aTFI-IV control module (distributor mounted). I appear to have both.Could this be the root of my problems? The vehicle is an 87 F-150 XLT with a 4.9 straight 6. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is getting expensive.

Try the fuel shutoff switch under the dash , drivers side. My 87 had similar problem, my switch was bad. Intermittently dying. Wait awhile and it would start , then die. I finally by-passed it and it still runs today. The switch is to cut off fuel in case of an impact(wreck).

Check the starter relay wire connections (on pass side inner fender). Tighten connecting bolts
