Ford Pick-Up Ford Pickup Trucks - 1948 thru 1979 1948 was the year that Ford introduced the "F" prefix for use in designating the load capacity of its lighter duty trucks. The 1/2 ton was called an F-1, the 3/4 ton truck was referred to as an F-2 and the F-3 designation meant a one ton carrying capacity Pickup. The "F" series continued through F-8 for heavy duty trucks.

Default 1948 Ford F1 Pickup

I have a 1948 Ford F1 pickup. Does anyone know which/or if any diesel engine and transmission will fit into a 48?

W/the narrow engine bay,I'd say the Cummins from a Dodge would be the easiest to package.

Actually the F-1 engine bay is pretty large since people regularly install the FE big block 460 V-8 engines. The 7.3L Powerstroke is about the same size as the FE engine so it should fit pretty easily. The Cummins 6BT is pretty long and would be more difficult to fit. You would probably have to modify the radiator support bracket.

The 7.3L diesel is pretty heavy at 938 pounds dry; but only about 125-150 pounds heavier than the FE big block. You will have to box the frame in the engine compartment.

What front suspension are you planning on using?

I'm in the process of collecting the parts to do a 7.3L diesel install in my '48 using an Industrial Chassis Dodge Dakota IFS.

Other diesel choices would be an older Mercedes 5-cylinder turbo diesel from the late 1980's.

I've seen a 390 and a 400 in a '48,pretty snug around the sides. And then you got to consider the turbo plumbing too.BTW,a 460 is not an FE engine,it's a 385 series engine.
