So far (knock on wood) I think I have figured out what happened that caused my Probe to surge. As one of the responders to my questions mentioned, it probably is the MAS (Mass Air Flow). It was true that at least a part of the problem was the MAS but it did not fail on its own. I had installed the Cold Air Intake on my v6 2.5L engine. When I did, there were two hose that connected to metal lines below the throttle body and betweenthe throttle body and the firewall. One of these lines goes to a cannister on the drivers side next to the firewall. The other , as the instructions said, was hooked in a hole on one of the Cold Air Intake pipes behind the MAS. What happened was that this line was pumping vapors into the intake behind the MAS and before the throttle body. This stuff smelled like gas but looked like dirty oil. It flowed down the cold air intake pipes, through the MAS and down into the air filter. In the meantime some was sucked back into the throttle body and thus caused the engine to surge. It also caused the MAS to fail. So if you install a Cold Air Intake on your Probe, make note of these two lines and you might just want to tape the hole shut and just let the line hang out of the way. So far this has worked for me and the car idles and drives beautifully. Hopefully it will last.
