Ford Probe The Probe appeared in 1988 and lasted until 1997 in the United States. It was based on a series of futuristic concept cars of the early 1980s, the likes of which have been seen in films like Judge Dredd, Back to the Future Part II and Total Recall. It was a coupe based on the Mazda GD platform, and was powered by a 2.2 L SOHC I4 cylinder Mazda F2 engine.

Default 1993 Ford Probe GT Clutch Problems

I have a 1993 Ford Probe GT that is not happy unless there is something wrong with it. I had an engine surging problem that a new Temp sensor fixed. Now I have a problem with my clutch. Sometimes when I am out in traffic, I push the clutch in to either idle or to shift gears and it will go to the floor but once I release it, it will stay about an inch off the floor. Not enough pedal to shift gears or even start the car because of the alarm. When it happens, I use the side of my foot to lift it up to full run. As soon as I do that, the clutch is back operating again until the next time it stays down. I had the brake warning light come on, so I had it filled. It turns out that too much fluid was put into it. I drained it so that it was between the Min and Max settings. Has anyone any idea of what would cause this? I have no idea what to check since I have never had this problem before. Could it be air in the lines? Should I bleed the clutch? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Have someone watch the fluid in clutch master cyld(with cap off) as you gently push on the clutch pedal. If they see air bubbles -- You have air in the lines.

fluid in clutch master cyld

The clutch master cylinder is located in the front of my 2.5L engine. If you look for the clutch fork, you will see a boot that has the rod in it that moves as the clutch moves.

Default clutch master cylinder

I noticed that the boot covering the clutch rod that goes between the master cylinder and the forks, is no good. I have noticed that when the clutch is up, this rod is loose and when the pedal stays down the rod is tight against the forks. Once the engine warms up that is when I lose the clutch. I pull the clutch pedal up with my foot and pump it a few times and it will stay working until I need to put the clutch all the way in. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is an issue like this on Corvettes too, I just have it happen on my car where the pedal stuck and I had to pull it up with my foot and I only got 18,000 miles on the car.

What we do to fix the issues is to remove all fluid, bleed and repeat till it is clean fluid in the reservoir.

Try this and if it doesnt work I would replace the slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder because 1 or the other is wore out and by replacing just 1 part will probably make the other part fail soon, seen it happen way to many times.

Though I know you dont have a Corvette but this link can show you why bad fluid does funny things. Hope this helps a little. Clutch_Care
