Ford ProbeThe Probe appeared in 1988 and lasted until 1997 in the United States. It was based on a series of futuristic concept cars of the early 1980s, the likes of which have been seen in films like Judge Dredd, Back to the Future Part II and Total Recall. It was a coupe based on the Mazda GD platform, and was powered by a 2.2 L SOHC I4 cylinder Mazda F2 engine.
I Have A '94 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6 DOHC W/ The Mazda Engine. My Roommate Was Driving It Yesterday And Heard A Series Of Rapid Pops That Sounded Like Backfiring Then The Engine Died.
I Have Replaced The Fuel Filter Thinking Perhaps It Was A Bad Filter, And I've Run Electrical Tests On The Fuel Pump Which Tested Green.
When I Went To Start Her, She Cranks But She Won't Turn Over, Not Even With A Spray Of Starter Fluid. We've Tested Voltage From The Battery, Through The Plugs On The Dist Cap, Through The Two Power Connectors And Through The Plug Wires And All Voltage Tested 12V Across The Board.
We've Also Grounded Plug Wire #1 To The Block And Cranked Her Over And Received Sparks So The ICM Is Fine. We Then Ran A Compression Test And We're Getting Somewhere In The Vicinity Of 90 - 110psi.
We Tested All Electrical Connectors Along The Fuel Rail As Well As The Injectors Themselves And All Are Receiving 12V Throughput. All Fuses Check OK Including The F/P INJ Relay.
I Am At A COMPLETE Loss As To What To Check Next. She's Acting Like She WANTS To Start But Won't. It's Almost As If She's Jumped Time, But She's Not Backfiring As You Would Expect Her To Be Doing.
Does ANYONE Have ANY Idea On What To Check Next And What Could Have Caused The Car To Just Stop Running In The Middle Of Being Driven?
Thank You So Much And I Certainly Hope I've Given Enough Information On What's Wrong And What We've Already Tried. We've Even Sprayed Starter Fluid Directly Into The Intake Manifold And It's Not Doing Anything, She's Just Not Firing.
Yes id have to agree, all fords duratec motors can have this problem with higher kilometers, as well as mazda's 2.5l design. If you did break a chain or it jumped a tooth, DO NOT try to start it anymore, hopefully it stalled soon enough that it didnt do too much damage.
You can check your timing by pulling off the front VC and seeing if the timing is intact or looks damaged. If you have jumped a tooth, you should be fine if you don't keep attemping to start it. The 2.5L's are non-interference motors. You will probably end up needing to replace the TB, the TBT, and the pulleys. Also you said something about back-firing, have you checked your cat?
I forgot I was registered here at these forums! LOL I feel bad! But I wanted to tell you all what the problem was! It wasn't timing at all! My Ignition Control Module went out! A new distributor WITH the ICM was $260 from AutoZone, so I bought that assembly, threw it onto the car and she fired right up!
Thanks all for your help because timing was my initial fear!
