Ford Probe The Probe appeared in 1988 and lasted until 1997 in the United States. It was based on a series of futuristic concept cars of the early 1980s, the likes of which have been seen in films like Judge Dredd, Back to the Future Part II and Total Recall. It was a coupe based on the Mazda GD platform, and was powered by a 2.2 L SOHC I4 cylinder Mazda F2 engine.

Question Transmission help needed (5 speed)

So i recently bought a 5 speed 3.0 v6 ford probe lx, and i was cruising around, just got the car was getting used to it, and it was all running fine other than third gear had play and reverse was a bitch to get into, which i was told was some basic bushing problems that were not too hard to fix, but anyways i was driving and i had to back up so i put it in reverse and i was backing out and than went to take it out of reverse and the shifter was stuck, so me being an idiot, i tried carefully taking it out of gear, and after a lil bit of playing the shifter lost ALL pressure i cannot put it in any gear it is in reverse right now and goes in reverse fine, but the shifter has no pressure in it at all it feels like a bowl of pudding, i went underneath thinking maybe it was a clutch line (shift line depending on the mechanics terminology) to realize it didnt have one that it had a hydraulic clutch, so i followed the shift linkage and and saw that when the shifter was moved that all the way down to the transmission the rod was moving just fine, i am thinking it is an internal transmission problem, i am dropping the tranny tomorrow and just looking for some insight from someone who might have any idea what is wrong, i am guessing its internal and that truthfully i will need a full rebuild (sigh...) please anyone that has a good idea what might have gone wrong reply with your insight, thank you.... (i just miss my lil probester =( lol )

IF the shifter bushings are shot(99% are) and the torque tube or whatever you want to call it(the solid mount arm not the shifter linkage) Has shot rubber bushings then it can
cause alot of problems. Don't go factory for the shifter bushings, Just head to those little trays at the hardware store and grab a bronze oilite bushing I think the od is.680
the id will need a bit of sanding with a dremel to make the bolt fit. Grease the bushing up
and reinstall it and the cover plate and it should shift (notch right in) on every gear.
More then likely your stock shifter bushings are shot(oem are plastic)
How much trans fluid is in the tranny btw? When I got mine it only had about 1 quart in it. I changed it twice with mercon 3 and then did it again with 1 mercon V and 2 mercon3 and I have pulled a bit out and replaced that with more mercon V (Mercon V is a synthetic and can handle higher temps etc.)

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

Do you have a Manual/Repair book for this car, chances are that there is an exploded view of the Transmission and it may show some shift bushings.

I friend had a Contour that had the same thing happen, it was a broken/wore bushing.

I had a pivot bolt brake on my Delorean's shift linkage, the shifter did nothing when this happened.

Dude. Do it. Right away, and dont put it off. start now with the screaming, and jump right in to the circle running.

Sorry. I had to register just to make that stupid statement. On a serious note, i am having a hell of a time getting a probe v6 5spd trans split. Picked it up from the junk yard (with low miles) and when I went to install the axles I found that the splined spiders had fallen out of the housing and there is a loose spider gear washer/bearing part that is rattling around. But I cant get it apart.

Does anyone have an exploded view of the trans or any tips on this fix?
