93 Probe SE Auto Trans No Overdrive, harsh shifting

Thanks for the help , I guess I'll be breaking out the screwdriver and hammer , where do they hide the tcm on this thing? can anyone tell me of a cheap place to find one , junkyard ,, eBay ?? is the computer on the probe the same as the mazda?

larryh, Your problem sounds exactly like mine. The TCM (transmission control module) in the case of the 2.0 auto Probe is an integral part of the power control module (PCM) sometimes called ECU) that manages the engine stuff. The TCM part manages the transmission shifting. Anyway, I finally changed the computer, and it fixed harsh shifting problem and now has overdrive again. I still think I need to change the vehicle speed sensor since the transmission doesn't always start off in 1st gear or shift out of 1st way too fast, but at least the transmission isn't going to hammer itself apart by slamming into 2nd and 3rd gear. Once I changed the computer, all the trouble codes (you should check yours) are gone except for the VSS, but Ford quit making them, and they're not available at the auto parts stores. The Mazda 626 2.0 auto is allegedly the same engine/transmission combo, and the VSS for it looks the same as the one in the Probe and is available. So, I may take a chance and see if it fixes the newer problem.

Yes, I just bought a 93 2.0 Auto trans today and am having exactly the same issue. I have been searching the web trying to locate a new TMC, but I am having zero luck. Can anyone direct me to an auto parts company? rlee63a4 Do you recall where you purchased your and the cost?
