Ford Probe The Probe appeared in 1988 and lasted until 1997 in the United States. It was based on a series of futuristic concept cars of the early 1980s, the likes of which have been seen in films like Judge Dredd, Back to the Future Part II and Total Recall. It was a coupe based on the Mazda GD platform, and was powered by a 2.2 L SOHC I4 cylinder Mazda F2 engine.

Check for vaccum leaks- thats free
Give it a tune up and replace the speed sensor- thats not

If you have a fram oil filter get it off, and put a motorcraft on ASAP, it'll help your motor and your oil pressure.

Drafting isn't that for race cars?

I've done some poking around myself on his car, now I'm no ford Mechanic but certain stuff about engines is universal. The oil seems to smell quite a bit like gas, and the exhaust seems to smell a bit like oil, and also makes a nice grey smoke most of the time. So it would seem to me like the rings are bad. Correct? Or are there any more likely possibilities?

I adjusted the idle up a little bit(the TB had a odd screw on it, deffinatly doesn't look factory) which seemed to help with the stalling, still lacks power over all, really bad off the line.

And the shift from first to second regardless of engine speed seems to be alot harder than it should be (it jerks the car pretty good even when your just granny driving it).

Still no luck with the speedo, wheres the speed sensor at on the trans?

And what vacuum source would you reccomend for testing the vacuum?

Just trying to help my friend out, so all help and advice is great.

This shouldn't be done, the car has an idle air control valve to control the idle. You definetly have some problems is you have to resort to this. Check idle vaccum at a vaccum line that runs the the intake manifold. The line to the brake booster is an ok source. Chilton's has a good table of results and causes. Also spray some trottle body cleaner in the intake tube and see if the motor accelerates. If so you probably have an vaccum leak.

Go to your local napa or any other parts store that deals wix and get an oil sample kit. Drain enough to fill the container and send it to wix. They will determine if you have excessive hydrocarbons, metal particles, and coolant in the oil. Usually the kit runs $20.

Yeah I knew that wasn't supposed to be there. And I'm aware that it should be self adjusting but it wasn't even at 500 RPM idle before I touched that screw. If i can find my vaccum gauge I'll check it. I'm pretty sure that it's got low vaccum. I'll tell him about the chilton's manual and the oil sample kit.

okay, did you get your ealier problems fixed?

The belt is slipping, probably a wore belt or a loose/wore tensior arm. Sometimes belt dressing, or a bar of soap will help solve the problem too.

i'm new to this site aswell i own a 93 probe mine runs great now that i've fixed it you might want to take a look at your water pump a bit closer cuz it might be shot, you might also have a head gasket problem if the smoke is grey if the smoke is black you might want to replace the pcv valve put a fuel system cleaner through it and the air filter also take off your throttle body intake hose and spray a shit load of carb cleaner in it with the valve open these are just a few tips i've ran into some simillar problems
