Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default 90 Ranger transmission problem

I have a 90 Ranger with the 4.0 V-6, 4x4, automatic transmission (4spd with O/D)

It stays in 1st for a long time, usually shifting to 2nd between 3500 adn 4000 rpm, and when it finally shifts it shifts hard. It shifts smoothly between all of the other gears on the way up and all the way down, the only problem is shifting from 1st to 2nd. transmission fluid is fine, cruise control and 4wd work fine, no warning lights or indicator lights on at any time.

any suggestions before I start shelling out some cash to a mechanic who might be motivated to see the whole transmission get changed out?

thanks

I had the same symptoms with my 93 4.0 4x4, but I had completely lost 2nd
people kept telling me it was a sensor

but when I took off the transmission oil pan something called a band fell out
(I'd send a picture if I knew how) and the transmission fluid was black, which I wasn't able to tell from the dipstick
It's small object but not too small

If it's been driven with the delayed shift take off the transmission pan and check the color from there
If that's fine then it probably is a sensor, if it's really dark then it could be the band

But for me I either have to get my tranny rebuilt or replaced
here in michigan for a rebuild is $1100 to $1500
and to get another could be from $600 on up

I hope that helps
