Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Exclamation 2000 Ranger Automatic Transmission Problem

Hi Guys, I have a 2000 ranger (3.0) with 134,000 miles. Unable to start out in "drive", trans slips, must start in 2nd gear and then move to "drive." Once in drive, transmission
is solid and no slipping. Vehicle has had recent flush and filter, trans shop couldn't find a problem. Could this be a bad torque converter or simple electrical problem, or is it time for a total rebuild?

Transmission Range (TR) sensor?
Shift selector switch?

Those could be possible causes, is the issue intermittent? Is the fluid level and condition fine (my guess is yes since it was just done)?

1st trans flush was at 60K miles, upon last flush (after problem) fluid looked OK, solenoids OK,
per the shop that had changed it.

Sounds like you need to take it to another trans shop for a check.

I have a 1990 4 Liter automatic with the same problem as you. This started 2 weeks ago. Yesterday while driving in town the transmission returned to normal function where I could start from the drive position and the transmission shifted through all gears just fine. Today all was well till this evening and it returned to the must start in 2nd gear then manually shift to drive and all is well until you slow to a stop and must shift to 2nd to take off. Any ideas on what you think this problem is would be appreciated. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Default 2000 ford transmission problems

Hey I have the same problem. I have to start in 2nd and shift to D when i get the rpm's high enough. once in D the truck drives great, i have power. It will spin wheels and i have no complaints. I don't have alot invested in the truck, but i would like to know if their is a remedy. Yesterday I was on a downhill and i put the truck in D and it drove off and acted like it was supposed too. Searching for cheap answers???

I have a 1999 Ranger 2WD 3.0 that will not start out in drive. If I shift into 2nd to start off and then shift to D, it does ok. Notice some slip when shifts from 2nd to 3rd. Had truck checked today and was told that the rubber seals in the tranny are deteriorated and that the clutches need to be replaced. They recommended replacing tranny instead of rebuilding.

I had the same identical tranny problem on my '98 Ranger 3.0 at about 120.000 miles and changed the fluid etc to no avail. I took it to a really good shop that had been in business for over 35 years. It was fixed with new first gear clutch packs and a valve body gasket. It was considered a partial rebuild and cost $900. I have had 2 instances of erratic shifting since in 25000 miles. Both of these times were in very hot weather after driving in city traffic for over an hour.
