Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Pop rivets get drilled out, very easy.

The gear in the picture do go bad. Mine was stripped at the top of the travel.
The rivets were much faster than bolts to put in. That is why Ford used them. They are strong and harden and not like regular rivets you use around the house. You will need
to remove then and use bolts in the repair. Read these posts again and maybe recruit some help as I did. You can do it!

Good Luck!

Crud, I just had Advance Automotive order the motor for me, and I'm not sure if I got the one with the gear with it. I really won't know if I need it though until I pull the panel and pull the motor that's in there now.

If you drill the rivets out in the window gear, how do you replace it with bolts? Is it pre-threaded? I don't know if I'm smart enough to figure this out.

You can use small bolts if there is clearance or $20 will buy a rivet gun with rivets.

I just repalced my driverside regulator. I bought a new replacement regulator and motor combo from ebay for $58 shipped to my door. Everything came out real easy. I pushed the window all the way up and removed the assembly. Then I took the replacement regulator and used four nuts and bolts of the correct side and inserted them and snugged the nuts down while it was out of the vehicle. Then I took my cheap 110v mig welder on low and just tacked the nuts down to the back of the regulator. Then pulled the bolts out, inserted the regulator into the door, and bolted it in. Only took a sec to tack them in and I am sure it saved alot of time and cuss words. Lubed everything up and it works good as new.

I got mine done yesterday. I replaced the old motor without testing it first, and then realized that the mechanic lied to me. There were no missing teeth or rusted parts. After overlooking everything, I saw that all of the parts were lacking grease, meaning none at all. I greased everything up, and the window works like it is suppose to. Basically, I replaced the motor for nothing, but since I used it, I cannot return it. Only the old one for my core charge. Pissed at the mechanic for lying right to my face.

on my 89 ranger, i drilled three access holes to get to the three hex-head screws holding the regulator to the window gear arm.

it all went flawlessly. i recommend a small c-clamp on the window track to hold the window up.

the regulator releases from the window gear arm without trouble and reattaches just as well. the only steady concern is to get the screws in and the regulator and gear arm fit comfortably. (provided the window is held as far up as possible!)

the regulator has TWO gear teeth.

ONE works with the window gear and the SECOND gear is inside, beneath the first.

THE SECOND GEAR could be shattered.

it is better to to take apart the regulator at the salvage yard and inspect the plastic gears. PULL the gear out. if the bottom gear (second) is broken or even if the top gear (first) is broken, be sure to completely clean out all the old grease to get all the shattered plastic.

it is a safer bet to just purchase the gear than the whole regulator. i paid $5.

Thanks for this great explanation, however after reading how others had the motor start working I decided to tap it with a large screwdriver and it started working without doing anything. I know this is not a fix but I don't use the truck much anymore and will have to be carful about lowering the window. Thanks again.
