Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default 2001 Check Engine Light

I'm new here and Just a quick question.

I have a 2001 Ranger XLT 4X4 3.0 liter and have a check engine light.
I ran the code and it comes back "EGR Excessive Flow".

Would that be the EGR valve or could it also be O2 sensors. I have had it on for about 1 week and it went off after I ran the code and 2 days later it came back and went off. Yesterday it came back on while driving it.

What do you guys think??

I would change the EGR Valve, from what I have read online here it is not too expensive or difficult. Just do a search for the EGR replacement and it should come up.

I also have a Ford Class C Motorhome and replaced one when I first got it 2 years ago and it was a piece of cake.

My vote would be for the DPFE sensor not an O2 sensor. If it does not idle rough the egr valve is not open. Was it a P0401?

Spikehorn,

Here's a good article that talks about the DPFE Sensor and EGR valve. It's for the Ford Focus, but I think it provides a real good explanation of how they work and a posible diagnostics capability.

In your case, excessive EGR flow could indicate that the EGR valve is stuck open.

STOP STOP STOP!!!! I HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM, i have the same truck, but a 4.0l. I had the code P0401 EGR flow insufficeint. I was told that people wrongly replace the EGR. i replaced the DPFE- Diferential Pressure Feedback- cost me $45 and only a few minutes of my time. it is located on the left side of motor above the power steering resevior. it say HI and REV on it with 2 tubes descending from the bottom, disconnect the wires and hoses, re install new DPFE, and disconnect the NEG battery cable for 15 secs minimum, and you should be good to go, my light hasn't come on yet.

attach a small hose to the egr/use vacuum pump or just suck/ if the valve opens the engine at idle will almost die/then the egr is OK/that is what the ford dealer told me they do/best advice yet
