Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default Running Too Rich

1988 Ford Ranger XLT with a 2.9 manual.
Starts up without difficulty. However, after a short time the truck will start to bog down, however when the accelerator is push in the truck will then surge. In addition, the truck rpm's will decrease and the truck will die without additional gas. Also, it is running too rich.
The ECM, Distributor, Cap and Rotor, plugs and wires, throttle body, coil pack have all be replaced.
What do you suggest.
It was blowing black smoke prior to these parts being replaced.

Default Any luck yet?

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. I was searching the web trying to figure out what is wrong with our ranger when I came across this web site. Our ranger is doing exactly the same thing. I just got done changing the fuel & air filters, plugs, cap & rotor to no avail. It runs ok as long as you are giving it gas, but dies when you let up. Trying to get it to idle it smokes and smells rich. Have you figured out what was wrong with yours? I'm thinking about getting a fuel pressure regulator now.

Its just a thought, but try checking the pcv valve. I had a similar problem with my 2000 ranger. I started by replacing all 3 O2 sensors. Nothing. Then i replaced the fuel filter and pcv valve. Also i cleaned the MAF sensor. After driving it a bit, the black smoke cleared up and the driving gradually improved. The pcv valve looked like it had chocolate syrup in it. I sprayed some throttle body cleaner (safe for fuel injectors) into the valve and it seemed to help. Pretty cheap parts, so it couldnt hurt to try.

could be fuel pressure regulator, easy to change $30 or so. just hope its not the oil pump check oil pessure when it happens if u have a gauge(hydralic lifters require oil pressure to open valves) thats a real #$%^& to change. I put kerosene instead of oil to clean the pump ran it a VERY little bit then put oil back in(thats rather important) and changed the oil again a month later filter too. and it worked for about a year
