Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Question 1994 2.3 l. Catalytic converter noise

My truck is making a loud rattling noise. It sounds like its the catalytic converter. It only rattles at certain motor speeds. It does it while idling and sometimes while driving. What is the problem?Could it be the muffler instead?

Last edited by sean130; 02-04-2009 at 03:34 PM.. Reason: might be muffler

Let the truck sit for at least an hour, maybe 2, before checking to see if the shield around the converter is loose. The shield is only welded on at a couple of points, and it is not uncommon for one of the welds to break causing the rattle.

Some folks simply rip the shield off, but hot catalytic converter have been know to cause grass fire.

The best solution is to get some large stainless hose clamps (you can link a few together to make them big enough) and place them around the converter and shield.

I also started having the similar issue described, in addition the passenger side floor becomes noticebly alot warmer/hot, I don't know if it has always been like that, but could that be acatalytic converter/heatshield issue?

The heat shield rattle is not going to cause the floor board to get hot unless you've ripped the heat shield off and still have a rattle, which could be that the 3 way catalyst on the inside of the cat has come loose... to which you'll have to replace it. Definatly something else going on if the floor board is getting hot and the heat shield is still there.
