Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default leaking fuel filler hose ???????

hey there,
new to forums. I need help with my 1990 ford ranger. i noticed gas leaking everytime i fill the tank. it only leaks at the end of the fill. decided to park the truck to see if maybe it was just a hose. it seems to be the hose connected to the filler neck ( i think, the haynes isnt really much help . reading other forums this seems like this is something that i might have to take to a mechanic to fix however i would prefer to do it myself.

can anyone help me with this---replacing the hose without too much trouble?

I agree whole heartedly. Take the bed off instead of dropping the tank. I've seen the gasket go bad for the pump assembly as well. I'm not 100% sure about your application, but be mindful that some Rangers have a 2 part filler hose. An outer hose and an inner hose. Inner hose is for filling up and the outer hose is for any over spill. My brother Shawn has an issue where when he filled it with a gas can it would leak out, but when filling up at the gas pump there was no issue. The outer hose was rotted, but the inner hose was fine. You want to make good and sure that the sending unit/fuel pump gasket is good and the filler hose is good. Any "leaks" and your fuel will evaporate and also allow more moisture into the tank making it have crappy fuel mileage (if the truck sits overnight or for long periods) and the moisture will cause surging, pinging, popping, the shakes, shingles, malarya, and hepeherpasyphalaids... well maybe not all that, but will cause the truck to run poor and the tank will need to be cleaned out.

It has been my experience on this year Ranger, that the filler hose has a hole in it. Now when you ask your local dealer how much, just be sitting down. You won't believe it. Then go to your local parts house and see if they can get you some hose to repair it with.

Check out LMC truck. LMC.com. They have the new filler hoses under $200. I bought one from Ford for $254.

They are multi piece afairs which I'm sure makes them very expensive. You cannot purchase just the rubber part.

Three small sheet metal bolts inside the filler door, six bed bolts and a wiring disconnect for the tail lights. I had the bed off in 20 minutes. Much easier than removing the tank.

I'm having the same problem with my '94 extended cab. It feels like the outer hose is cracking where it meets the tank. It seems like removing the bed would be the way to attack this.
It sounds like removing the bed should be pretty straight forward. Any tips on getting those bed bolts off? Looks like I need to get a large torx socket as well.

The bed is really light too I couldn't believe it when we did my fathers fuel pump! His was also rotted right on top of the tank. I don't get why this is a issue on these trucks but I would think that spraying the hose down with silicone lube or armor all every now and then will prevent it from happening again or if yours has not torn yet guys go ahead and do it!

If you have intermittant running problems or a flat spot/buck/dying/cutting out while accelerating.
Do your self a favor and try some dedicated gas
line dryer, Double or even triple dose it, It's cheaper
then throwing parts at a problem that doesn't throw
codes!!

I had the same exact issue. Took the bed off and replaced the fuel filler pipe/tube.
