Ford RangerMore than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.
My 96 Ranger failed inspection because of a bad fuel filler hose (also triggering evap sensor/ engine light). I was told by Ford dealer that it would cost > $640 to fix.
Is this b.s. or what? Can I fix it myself (i'm no mechanic), or take to someone who will do it cheaper?
I have a cracked fuel filler hose on a 97 Ranger, which I believe might be triggering the check engine light (code p1443). It appears to be a simple fix if you have a new hose, just a couple of hose clamps to attach to the body and fuel tank. It's a tight fit between the pickup bed and fuel tank, but do-able. I don't believe any auto parts store will carry the hose, and I called the parts department at a dealership, who gave me a quote of $300-$400+ depending on body style. I asked why it was so expensive and they said something about it being a hose inside of a hose. I recommend trying to find the hose off a Ranger at a scrapyard and replacing it yourself. One possible difficulty is finding a Ranger with the same body style, I don't know if they could be interchangeable at all.
Just took mine in because of a fuel leak along the hose. It is badly cracked up. The only replacement I've found are in the $300 range as well. Have you guys had any luck finding one elsewhere that is reasonable?
I have a 96 XLT and now the thing leaks gas whenever I'm filling it up at the pump. I've noticed this happens if the pump nozzle is resting to heavily in the tube. The leaking really starts though when the automatic shut-off clicks in and knocks the gas pump nozzle to stop the flow. At that point gas spills out from under the truck. I can usually keep smelling gas in that portion of the vehicle for a day or two later as it evaporates. This problem has gotten worse.
Does replacing the fuel filler hose solve this? How much is the current cost?
Hey guys just registered. I have 1996 Ranger XLT 4.0 auto 4x4.Fuel filler hose leaks too. Found new one on E-bay for $98.00. It's a business that has them to buy outright instead of bidding on them.
