Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

In May 2008 bought a used 1999 Ranger XLT 3L automatic with 105,000km (sorry, Canadian, eh). Now at 180,000 Km. Disappointed at what things have gone wrong. First the power door locks (see my post on repair), the in one trip I lost the CD player (radio OK), the cruise control and horn, and the power steering fluid chiller!
I replaced the cruise switches on the steering wheel - still doesn't work!
I had the clockspring replaced in the steering column to restore the horn, but still not cruise. Bummer.
Had the chiller replaced for the leaky power steering system (also found a mouse nest with 4 babies still kickin' in the air filter well!)
Finally I had to replace the ERC tube! it formed a hairline crack near the manifold that I couldn't fix myself. Made the truck sound awful on acceleration, but not like a muffler gone south.

Anyways, in general I'm pretty disappointed with Ford quality. I had a Toyoto Camry from new 1988 until I sold it in 2007 to move back to Ontario from Alberta. None of the above problems occurred and few other unusual service items other than normal long service replacements.

Now the turn signal is becoming intermittent.

Default '92 Ranger 4x4 sport 4.0L & '03 Ranger 3.0L

I had a '92 nice red 4x4 Ranger Sport with the 4.0L engine (manual transmission). Put 125K miles on truck before trading it in. Trany was rebuilt at around 25K miles since it got stuck in 2nd gear. Drive shaft replaced at around 95K. Good off road performance and good hiway milage - 25mpg at 65mph.

I also drive a '02 3.0L Ranger for work. It has 105K miles and no repairs so far besides maintenance. Engine and trany still pulls strong.

2001 Ranger XLT extended cab; 99,000 miles; replaced the cam and cam sensor twice, egr, fuel filter, and 3 injectors in the last 2 months; then I got a code and replaced the plugs and plug wires, cleared all the codes. Everything is good so far.

I have 1997 Ranger I would say no major problems bought it new changed alternator, heater control panel, plugs wires, tires a few times, brakes a few times, lots of oil and filters. I have to fix a power steering fluid leek right now but thats it would say been reliable never left me stranded 150k miles.

2003 XL Super Cab 4.0L 4x4 with a 5 Speed. Pretty easy to maintain for the shadetree mechanic. I have 151,000 with no major problems. It needs an alignment now but other than that it has run great! I could not be happier with this truck.

My '98 had 128,000 miles on it when I bought it six months ago. I've put about 500 miles on it. It just developed a lower end knock. That leaves me looking for a replacement engine.

Default Great Truck!

I have a 1999 Mazda B2500 w/ 2.5L I4 and 5-Speed Manual Trans
129,000 Miles

I bought this truck used in 2002 with 27,000 miles on it.

Up until now, nothing major has gone wrong! I have replaced the usual brake pads, had the disks and drums turned once (just because I love the truck). Change the coolant every 5 years w/ prestone yellow but have not changed the water pump or any belts. I run syntethic/dyno oil blend and usually go 10,000 miles between oil changes. Same transmission fluid, and have not drained the differential or anything. Changed MAP sensor once, EGR sensor module once, alternator once, and I'm on the second battery.

I have the usual problems:
Interior lights were staying on when I bought it, the dealer sprayed WD-40 in the door switch and I have not had the same problem since.

Windshield Wipers have a grimlin living in them and operate on and off randomly at will. Now the wipers only work on the High and off positions but the stow function no longer works and I have to time turning off the wipers or they stop at whatever angle. Its like a carnival game Right?

Water leaks into the truck through the trim seam behind the drivers seat, I haven't even tried to fix it.

So you get the idea...

I will never sell this truck, I kissed my wife for the first time in it and drove cross country to get me first job after college. I will always fix it if possible and hopefully my kids can drive it some day.

Best of luck to those that are having problems, but it is a great vehicle!
