Ford RangerMore than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.
Just helped my dad with his 1992 Ranger. We took out the starter because all it would do is click, and everything else including the wires are in working condition. hooked the starter to a 12v source, and it kicks (as in it starts to turn and engage as it should), but wont turn and goes back to its default position. Starter is approx. 3 years old and sat untouched in the ranger for 2 years. Any ideas?

Possible bad starter solenoid/relay.
Possible dirty/loose electrical connection (despite your inspection).

If I read your post correctly, you bench tested it, and the soliniod slides the bendix drive forward as it should, but the motor does not turn. I agree... time for a new starter.

yes, thats right Joe. My dad just took the whole starter apart to make sure nothing was sticking, and everything turns just fine... Put it back together, and still nothing. We are going to take it into a shop and have them check it out just to be absolutely positive we need a new one. Pretty strapped for cash so if we can save ourselves the 60-100 dollars we would have spent on a new starter, that will be excellent.
Anybody have any other ideas that might be the issue? Or anyone know where to get a new starter for the 92 Ranger for cheap? Either online or in the Madison, Wisconsin area?
You may find that a local rebuilding shop might check it and not fully rebuild it, but just repair what is wrong with it for less, (than the cost of a full rebuild) with the proviso that there is no warranty. Another option is a junk yard.
