Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default 2002 ranger 5 speed problems

i was driving on the freeway to pick up my friend from work. it was a 20 minute drive. i wasn't driving super fast, just cruising at 70mph in 5th. i pull off the freeway and drive on city streets for about 5 minutes. then park the car for about 10minutes. when i turn the car back on it didn't quite catch, and stalled. nothing too out of the ordinary. so i started it back up and put it in first and drove away. i instantly noticed that there was a problem. it was shifting extremely hard and when i would try to coast, the car would lag down, as if the engine compression was bogging the car down. so i slowed down and stopped at a stop sign and the car was engulfed with a burning smell, it didnt smell like burnt rubber it almost smelt sweet like gasoline. i decided to keep driving just for a few more miles (to get out of the ghetto). so i find a decent parking lot and park the truck. i open the hood, nothings smoking, i check the clutch fluid level, its fine, i check under the truck and no fluid is leaking. so i just let the truck sit there for about 5-10minutes. i start it up, leave it in neutral, and rev the engine and the engine sounds strong. so i put it back and gear and there were no problems driving home, shifted fine. im very perplexed. any ideas?

Sounds like the clutch was not fully disengaging. Like caused by a bad master/slave cylinder.

Also sounds like you have "smoked" the clutch meaning it will need to be changed.
