Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

I am planning on buying a 3L 2 Wheel drive Ranger. I want to know some of the minor and major problems with that size of engine, if any?
Thanx.

I have a 2000 Ranger XLT with the 3.0L Vulcan engine. Bought it w/132K miles and it now has 155K. the only issue I've had is replacing the DPFE sensor twice ($50 each, a common problem with Fords that have this kind of sensor), and the idler pulley for the serpentine belt needs to be replaced. I've read that if this engine is taken care of, it can last 200-300K miles.

FYI though, this engine doesn't get the best gas mileage, I get about 15 mpg city, 20 hwy. Hope this helps.

I have a 96 with the 3.0L and It just turned 150,000 today, I pull a crown victoria with it and have had no problems I have also read that if they are maintained ( the older series) they will last 200-300,000 miles.. The gas mileage isn't the greatest im getting about 16 city and 20 highway but the engine idles smooth and runs quiet. But its all about how you maintain your vehicle. I bought mine with 93k form a retired mechanic next door and the truck runs great.
