Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Smile Input on best choice for oil filter & Question

I purchased a 2008 Ranger XLT 2.3L 4 cyl and use Castroil Syntec 5w20 and have not settled on an oil filter; I've used a K&N, WIX and a Mobil 1. ANY suggestions?? Also I changed my air filter to a K&N and noticed some improvements in accelleration and MPG's BUT have read about some oil being pulled into the air system from the oil charged filter. AGAIN any suggestions? Thanks to all

ONE MORE: I'd like to use Castroil Edge BUT for now it is only availible in 5w30 and my owners manuel suggest 5w20. Would it void my warranty? and is it that big of a change? Thanks!

Motorcraft filters are cheap at WalMart, that is where I get mine. Remember your engine was designed to be run on a Motorcraft filter. Other filters will work but are also designed to work on other types of cars besides Fords so they will not be perfect for you application.

I use Castrol. Does your warranty cover the engine if you use synthetic?

K+N filters are OK, use them in all my cars. As long as they are not over oiled they will not be a problem.

There was a study done comparing filters, I don't recall what was said of the mobil 1, but WIX and MotorCraft were equally well made.

Personally I would stay away from the K&N air filters that you have to oil. I just use a fiber filter designed for the car and replace it whenever I get around to it.

I spoke with a service tech at my local FORD dealership and he said it came with Motorcraft 5w20 Synthetic Blend and he advised $ for $ he would continue with that and that Full synthetic was ok and would not void my warrenty.

Roger !

Ford does not specifically recommend natural, blend or full synthetic. Use what you want as long as it meets the API specifications (or better) found in your owners manual.

The manual states that the 2.3L and 3.0L engine should use 5W20 viscosity oil.

I'm with Mark, I use Motorcraft filters (from Walmart).

Also I changed my air filter to a K&N
K&N air filters require regular servicing. If you live/drive in a dusty area that service interval will be short. Failure to service the filter will cause issues with your engine performance.

It is my understanding that the oil on the K&N may cause a malfunction of the MAF sensor. That is why I recomemnd staying away from them. It is my understanding that Ford does not recommend cleaning the MAF at any particular interval, but if one uses an oiled filter, that one will need to clean the MAF. I have not read any particular interval for that. Nor do I know if cleaning of it on a regular basis may cause the air temp filament to fail. Since there is so much that I do not know, I stay with what Ford put in the car.

Here is the study I referred to earlier,
Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources

as a result I use Purolator or WIX but these all fall into the same category. according to the study. Hehehe Walmart is too far away to get motorcraft.

Bosch, Motorcraft, PowerFlo, ProLine, Purolator Premium Plus, Purolator Pure One, Quaker State

The study itself is flawed, in that as I recall it does not do a flow test, but IMO (which is worth less than a cup of coffee) as long as one changes oil between 3-5,000 miles the filter shouldn't be so clogged that it isn't in by pass mode. If you visually inspect your oil and it appears dirty too soon, then you may need to change the oil and filter sooner.

Perhaps this issue only occurs when one OVER oils the filter. I do not know. Maybe there is no issue if one does not over oil it. As I said, I don't use the K&Ns, I thought I would do a search to see if the problem is proliferant or not.

I searched on
