Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default Got Me A New Toy... Need Some Help

Picked up a free 96 Ranger (3.0L V6) this weekend. Has some issues but it does run so that's a start.

The truck had a CEL on when I got it. Brought it to Autozone to have the codes pulled and got multiple O2 sensor codes. O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction codes for each of the three O2 sensors (P0130, P0136, and P0150 I believe if I remember correctly). Also got an 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction for one of the sensors as well.

Sounds like an electrical issue to me. Haven't had the time to check the wiring for the O2 sensors but I'm assuming they all meet up somewhere. Anyone else had a problem like this? Wondering if the O2 sensor harness got messed up somehow. Truck runs fine and idles well so it's not acting like the sensors are all messed up.

Ideas?

It's rare for all three sensors to crap out at the same time and have the engine run OK. The codes may be left over from a previous problem, perhaps they weren't cleared after the repair was performed. Clear the codes to see if they return.

A good scanner will show whether they are functioning in real time, with the engine running.

P0130 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 1)
P0136 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 2)
P0150 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor I)

the truck is actually already sitting with the battery unplugged. im assuming (like other vehicles ive worked on) that this will reset everything.

the next step i think would be to hook it up to real-time scanner and see what each sensor is reading i guess.

any recommendations on a cheap scanner? friend owns a shop and has some but i won't be able to use them until this weekend and i would like to figure this out sooner if possible. it cant just be a simple obdII code puller, i would need real-time data. prob could even just buy an obdII to usb cable and grab some freeware offline correct?

Cheap or Good...you can't have both haha! Search the internet, there are quite a few choices for hand held type. Software/USB type has been my choice but it's pricey.....Autoenginuity.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry if it's running OK. Just wait till your friend can get his scanner on it.

all 4 o2 sensor codes turned out to be caused by a blown fuse. the 15A fuse located under the hood.

BIG thanks to BroncoJoe19 for the wiring diagram. helped me track down the problem.

if ppl have multiple o2 sensor fault codes def check that fuse 1st. always start with the cheap, easy stuff lol saved me lots of money in the long run.
