Ford RangerMore than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.
I own a 2005 Ford Ranger XLT and experiencing some electrical problems. Original alternator on vehicle was overcharging and blowing front headlamps. I changed the alternator fro a new one purchased from Ford agents. Now when I use my lights and airconditioner, the revs drop and the dash board lights dim. When I rev the dash board lights brighten only to dim again when I leave the accelerator.
Did a voltage check, Alternator is charging correctly - between 13.5 and 14V with lights and Airconditioner on.
Any explanations. I suspect the Battery is cooked because of the overcharging from the original alternator - but starts fine in the morning!!
Took the vehicle to an auto electrician. He says that the generic make of the new alternator is causing the dip. The new alternator only starts charging after passing 1000 revs (not sure of units), which explains the lights getting brighter.
Battery test showed no problems (not sure of voltage reading). The voltage dip lessens after long trips.
