Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Exclamation No Oil Pressure at start up.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4 x 4 with the 4.0 engine and when I start up the truck, it initially registers no oil pressure. Let it warm up, and finally the oil pressure indicator will move to what I would say is half-scale or a little more. The colder the weather, the longer it takes the gauge to register. Is this the sending unit giving me problems or the mechanics of the gauge itself or something else? It works fine after that until I let the truck set a while and then it does the same thing all over again.
\Any ideas on what the problem really is?

Thanks

for the price of a sender try it, there was a problem with 4.6 and 5.4 doing this and it was just the sender acting up.

I have a 1999 ranger 4 cyl. I am having the same problem. All of the manuals that I have looked at say that it is located just forward of the oil filter. However, I cannot locate it. I called ford and they said that they put some on the back of the engine just below the intake manifold. I looked there and still couldn't find it. If anyone knows the correct location please reply. Thanks.

Default Found it!

I am replying to all the post on this page. After some trial and error I located the sending unit. It is right below the intake on the back of the block drivers side. It is the only thing that is there that has a wire going to it. However, something I found out is that Autozone, Ford, and a local autoparts store have the incorrect part number.

So, my suggestion would be locate anything in that general area and disconnect it and start the engine and see if you get oil pressure if you do... then that is not the right wire. However, on the other hand if you don't then you have found the correct one. The only way that I got the right one was is to look at it and then find one like it. Napa is the only place that I found that had the correct part for my make and model. Good luck to all. Later.

Default Same issue different engine.

Same problem with a 97 Ford Ranger, 4 cyl engine. Was told by friend that the oil pan gasket was broken down by long term exposure to oil. Gasket material then clogged up the oil pump strainer which delays getting oil pump pumping. He sail as the strainer continues to clog, the delay between start and oil pressure indicated gets longer. Also have a slight knock initially if it has been a couple of days since the truck was running last. Any one that might confirm or refute this. I'm told fix is removing oil pan and cleaning strainer which will be much more unpleasant than a sender unit.

I'd hold off pulling the oil pan. If you have doubts on your oil pressure try changing the sender first. I've used slick50 before and plugged up a sender. The Teflon sticks inside the sender, and doesn't allow pressure to build inside the unit. Finally the oil will get warm enough to allow the oil to flow in and out of the sender. I recommend using either transmission fluid or SeaFoam to clean the crankcase next time you change your oil.

Also to point this out, yes if you had no oil pressure you would know it. And you would know it faster then waiting the 3 minutes for the guage to activiate. I have been driving my 01 like this for the past 4 years and havent thought twice about fixing it. I also noticed that it really doesnt depend on time for it to activate as it does matter how cold the engine is. If my engine has been running recently or during the hot summer months, the guage activates immediately. However during the cold canadian winters it sometimes takes upwards of ten minutes to activate. This isnt something I would worry to much about but if you have the time and the money, go for it
