Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default 98 ranger starting problem

My 98 Ranger 3.0L will immediately start then stall. It will rarely try to stay running but stops as if the ignition was turned off each time. There where no codes and I did not see any vaccum lines off or fuses blown so I changed the fuel pump. The problem did not go away. Any ideas or further trouble shooting strategies? As a side note, I ran it almost dry yesterday before filling her up. Shortly before the gas station at a stop light the idle faultered and almost stalled but she caught herself and did not act up again until this morning when the problem appeared. The fuel filter is one year old.

Turn your key on and bleed your fuel line at the valve on the fuel rail. It may have air in the line. Hope this helps.

I was able to start the vehicle after repeatedly trying this afternoon. Any advancement of the throttle would kill the engine as it pulsed between barely running and 1000 rpm. As soon as the mass airflow sensor was disconnected the idle stabilized.

Just thought I'd pass the info on.
