Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default shifting problems

I have a 96 ranger that is hard to shift. I drive about 250 miles a day. Early in the morning everything is find, but in the afternoon I experience problems shifting. Sometimes if I double cluth it helps. When I'm at a stop sign is when I experience the most difficults trying to get it into first gear. I've replaced the master cylinder, but didn't help. Any suggestions or is the master cylinder that I replace bad also.

Sounds like it's time for a new clutch. If you live in the South Bay area in Los Angeles, I suggest contacting Steve at California Transmissions, 310-973-7474. His shop worked on my 93 Taurus and did an excellent job at VERY affordable prices. Without a doubt, only he'll EVER work on my 2001 Ranger XLT when the time comes.

I had the same problem with my 92, shifting fine when cold, but the warmer it got, the harder it was to get into gear. I had to fiddle with shifting into 3rd, then i could get down into first. we ended up bleeding the clutch quite a bit until the fluid ran clean (it was quite dirty to begin with), and eventually a big chunk of black stuff came out, like it was plugging the lines.
