Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Default Low Oil Pressure Gauge

Greetings all,

I have 1998, 6 cyl and i just noticed a intermittent "low oil pressure" gauge problem. the light on the dashboard says to check gauge.
sometimes the pressure gauge works fine, sometimes it's low just above the L and sometimes the needle bounces up and down while driving or at idle. the oil level is full and the oil is brand new.
do i have a serious engine problem here?

I'd would bet/hope for a bad oil pressure sender or the wire that runs to the sender is in poor shape.

FYI:
thank god, it was a bad oil pressure sending unit ($8). i just replaced it this morning.
i had a heck of a time finding it. on a 6 cyl 4.0L engine, the sensor is located on the drivers side, down low near the front of the engine block. i had to take the left front wheel off and remove a mud flap to get to the unit.

I thought you said you had put a mechanical gauge on it and it didn't read any sort of oil pressure.
