Ford Ranger More than two decades ago, the Ford Ranger debuted as an answer to various compact pickup trucks being made available by Japanese automakers. The Ranger was cleanly styled and offered with a choice of a 6-foot or 7-foot bed. Ford boasted that the Ranger had more interior room than the best-selling imports and that 4-by-8-foot construction material could be carried in the bed.

Unhappy ratteling pinging noises on highway

pinging noise happenss in 5th overdrive gear. Accelerating in this gear is out of the question as the ratelling pinging noise goes crazy. If I drive against the wind on the highway I have to put it in 4th gear because of pinging and ratelling. My mechanice buddy teases me, says its cause I got a weak 4 banger, But my sister has a 4.0 v6 and it does the exact same noise on the highway. Except with her truck (autotranny) u can ignore it. I tried to ignore mine and it got louder and louder then engine light came on, put it in 4th gear and slowly got better, engine light went off. I can use overdrive on the highway only when Im light and thers no wind. I also have a ratelling noise (no pinging) at engine idle in neutral, but goes away when I push the clutch pedal. I was told by someone that its the release bearing in the clutch. My hope is that the highway noise is also the release bearing, this way Im hoping if I get a new clutch I get two birds with one stone. By the way Im only at 103,000 kms. My nightmare is that the pinging noise on the highway is from my engine.

I just wanted to add that I do have plans on taking it to Ford this spring, but was hoping for some heads up on what the problem might be
