Ford Sport TracThe Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a four-door, five-passenger, midsize pickup. It was unique when it first appeared in 2000, but today it must compete with midsize four-door pickups from every major player. Essentially a Ford Explorer with a pickup bed, the Sport Trac offers plenty of room inside for people and out back for cargo.
I have a 2004 Sport Trac 4.0L SOHC with 33,000 miles on it. I have kept up with the general maintenance on it myself, ie: oil changes every 3,000, air filters, gas filter etc. I want to grease the chassis but cannot find any grease fittings. In doing some research I have found that my Sport Trac does not have the zerk fittings and that all the boots are "lubed for life" and do not need general maintenance. My question is what can I do myself to properly grease what needs to be greased? I am kind of hesitant to pierce the boots with a needle to inject some grease but if that is what I need to do than I will just to make sure they are lubed. Plus what other areas can I do myself?
Some people will go as far as to drill a hole and tap it for a zerk. Personally I'd just keep a good eye on your steering and supspension parts. When the parts fail replace them with Moog or Spicer branded parts.
I wouldn't touch them unless they go bad. once you pierce the boot its only a matter of time till it dries up.
I would take jonmark's advice and just keep a close eye on them and when they go bad replace them with a brand that allows you to lube them if your worried about it.
