1995 taurus heater core

My 1995 Taurus has steam or smoke coming from the top vents. This only started three days ago. The floorboards are not wet and I still have heat if I don't mind the steam (which doesn't smell good at all). From everything I have seen, my heater core needs replaced. However, I have found out that the whole dashboard needs to be taken out to get to it. The lowest estimate I have gotten is $700, which is completely out of the question at this time (that is 2 paychecks). I am a single mom living paycheck to paycheck. I don't need to use the heat, but I do need to use my defrost, I was almost in an accident this morning because I could not see out of my winshield. I need help, PLEASE!!!

As you note the heater core needs to be replaced. The cost is mainly due to the labour, so you could shop around for a lower estimate, but it is not likely to be significantly lower.

An alternative is to buy a radiator sealant for the cooling system. It is usually effective for minor cracks which yours sounds like. It is not expensive, but you must follow the manufacturers directions. It will take a few trips to circulate through the cooling system and seal the leak. Do not be disappointed in early lack of results. In my experience it works and will last for a while.
