Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

Default dragging noise

I have an 89 taurus wagon, 6cyl 3.0. I had both rear brakes replaced about three months ago, and lately i hear this dragging noise when I am driving. I think its my rear wheel bearings going out. How long do I have before a catastrophic failure, and are they a pain to replace? I am pretty mechanically inclined, and do most of my own vehicle work, except for brakes. Is it one of those jobs where you want to throw a wrench through the windshield halfway through?

Given the age of the vehicle there are numerous posibilities. The emergency brake cable may be sticking. The rear brake hoses may be swollen inside from age and causing the rear brakes to drag. The caliper pins may be sticking, but I would hope that whoever did the brakes would have replaced them, or at least greased them. A ciliper piston may be sticking. The rear wheel bearing(s) may be dry. There could also be a problem in the proportioning valve. Do some diagnostic work.

Yeah, i replaced the bearings today. They didn't look bad, but it isn't making that noise anymore, so I guess that was it.
